How to Order a Telephone Number

This article covers how to order the various types of telephone numbers (also known as DIDs) with SIPTRUNK step by step. It’s fast and easy to place an order, and you can expect to get up and running with a new DID in just a few minutes. Note that you will need to have a payment method on file and an active billing plan on a SIP trunk to begin placing and receiving calls.

SIPTRUNK offers three main types of DIDs: Standard, Enhanced, and Toll Free. These can all be immediately ordered via the automated system in the customer portal. Additionally, we offer SMS-enabled numbers and international number ordering. If you require one of these two number types, please send your request to our Billing team.

Note: Choose “Enhanced” if you require a DID to dial out to E911 and need to associate a street address with the number. You may enter that address into the fields in the Order page and the changes will apply automatically after checkout. Refer to this article about E911-compliant numbers for more information about the topic.

Current DID rates and setup fees are all listed on the Order Telephone Numbers page just below “Standard Local DID (STD),” “Enhanced Local DID with e911 (ENH),” and “Toll Free DID (TF)” text.

  2. Choose the type of number you want to search for and select the “Begin Search” button to expand a list of area codes. For Standard and Enhanced DIDs, you will also need to select a state and city.

  3. Check the box in the “add to order” column for the DID you want. There are options to choose between Standard and Enhanced. You will also need to select an initial SIP trunk assignment for the DID (you may update the assignment at any time after the order).

  4. The “Order Details” box will update each time you add a DID and you may expand a list view to see all of the numbers currently included in the order along with a breakdown of fees. Once you are finished with adding DIDs to the order, click “Review Order”.

  5. You will then be asked to review the order again and see the total invoice charge. The entered geolocation address info for Enhanced numbers will also appear on the invoice and any errors will display before the “Process Order” button is available.

Note: You may also add CNAM in the input field for the number type you are purchasing or you may add/update CNAM at any time after placing the order.

Note: If you encounter any geolocation coding error for an Enhanced number, please contact Support and we will resolve the error. Typically, this is a matter of finding the exact address match and a Google address lookup will result in an exact match.

  6. Once you process the order, you will see invoice and order numbers on the page which you can also reference later by navigating to the “Billing” tab. You can view your DIDs by hovering over the “SIP Trunking” tab and choosing the “Telephone Numbers” submenu option.

  7. Your DIDs will be immediately ready for setup after the order and you can manage the numbers from the “Telephone Numbers” menu. Click on the pencil edit icon next to the DID you wish to edit to make changes such as updating the CNAM or converting Standard numbers to Enhanced numbers and vice-versa.
